The Oval Test commencing from September 05 2002 between India and England in the ongoing npower Test series will be the 100th for the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. He becomes the 4th Indian after Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Kapil Dev and the 26th player in the history of 1614 Tests played which will be inclusive of the Oval Test.

Only four players have the distinction of scoring a century in their centenary Test - Colin Cowdrey and the present wicket-keeper Alec Stewart of England, Javed Miandad of Pakistan and Gordon Greenidge of West Indies. Miandad and Greenidge are the only ones to make debut century as well as a century in the 100th Test.

It may be interesting to note that Tendulkar would become the youngest to reach the coveted milestone at the age of 29 years 134 days, out beating his fellow countryman Kapil Dev who was hitherto youngest at the age of 30 years 314 days in reaching the 100th Test. Just for the record Sunil Gavaskar who was the first Indian to reach this milestone was 19 years 1 day when Colin Cowdrey had reached this landmark on 11 July 1968 against Australia at Birmingham to become the first ever player in this category.

Gavaskar reached the milestone at the age of 35 years 99 days on 17 October 1984 against Pakistan at Lahore when Tendulkar was a young boy at the age of 11 years 176 days. Tendulkar was not even born when Cowdrey had achieved the feat. Geoff Boycott of England at 40 years and 254 had been the oldest to reach the milestone when he reached the milestone on 02 July 1981 against Australia at Lords.

Incidentally Geoff Boycott and Sunil Gavaskar are among the panel of commentators before whom Tendulkar would pass the personal milestone. Following are some of the stats pertaining to the players who have passed the milestone of 100 Tests in their career. (All statistics calculated as on 05 September 2002)
