Kozhikode: Legendary cricket all-rounder Kapil Dev on Tuesday gave a clean chit to the former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin saying that "to me, Mohammed Azharuddin is innocent".[an error occurred while processing this directive]"Azhar had played with me for several years and to my mind he has not done anything wrong," Kapil said while reacting to reporters queries on Azharuddins's suspected role in match-fixing that has kept him away from the game. At the same time, he said, if anyone could provide sufficient proof to Azhar's involvement in match-fixing, "Then, I will turn his severest critic. "Let us not criticise someone who had served the country for so long, believing allegations that are yet to be proved," the former captain said. Asked if he meant that he continued to support Azharuddin, Kapil said "It is not a question of supporting or not, but he had been my colleague like Sachin Tendulkar and others for many years. Rather than believing the charges, I will better like to go by my observations. "I was myself hitting the front-pages in newspapers for several days, but also found trapped in a baseless controversy later," Kapil said, adding "I am only supporting the cause of a great cricketer who was my contemporary."PTI
