Kimberley (South Africa): Sri Lanka defeated South African province Griqua Diamonds by seven wickets in a World Cup warm-up match at the De Beers Diamond Oval on Tuesday. After light but persistent morning rain had resulted in the match being reduced from 50 overs to 36 overs, Griqua's won the toss and elected to bat first. Excellent opening spells by Sri Lankan pacemen Chaminda Vaas and first-change Dilhara Fernando saw the provincial squad end at 163 for eight.

Sri Lankan openers Marvin Atapattu and the ever-aggressive Sanath Jayasuriya raced to 46 in eight overs before the Sri Lankan skipper was well caught in the slips by Pieter Koortzen off Deon Kruis for 25. Kumar Sangakkara and veteran Aravinda da Silva were both soon caught behind - de Silva being brilliantly caught one-handed by diving wicket-keeper Wendell Bossenger. Atapattu then moved into top gear and Mahela Jayawardena gave him excellent support.

Adding 112 runs in their unbroken fourth wicket partnership in just 70 minutes, the Sri Lankans went to 168 for three and a comfortable victory with 6.1 overs to spare. Atapattu finished with 76 not out scored off 90 balls, hitting seven boundaries and one six, Jayawardena's confident undefeated 47 came off just 49 balls.
