The Hague: Dutch Foreign Minister Jaap de Hoop Scheffer fears that Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe will use the World Cup to gain political prestige in his country, the Dutch ANP news agency reported on Monday. De Hoop Scheffer and the Minister of Sports Clemence Ross have informed the Dutch Cricket federation KNCB of the "grave humanitarian and political situation" in Zimbabwe.
The Netherlands is one of the six teams scheduled to play in the World Cup in Zimbabwe. In principle the Dutch Cricket federation follows the lead of the International Cricket Council (ICC), which sees no reason to move the games from the African country. "We will go on unless the KNCB or the ICC decide otherwise," Dutch team captain Roland Lefebvre said. Britain announced on Monday that its team would boycott the games in Zimbabwe.
