Bangalore: England was struggling to keep its innings afloat, ending the first day of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba on 124 for 9 with Laura Harper on 20 and Lucy Pearson keeping her company on nought. The proceedings at the Gabba were painstakingly slow with the England batsmen content to tap the ball all day long - scoring just a touch more than a run an over. The Australians managed 108 overs in the day, which emphasises the slow scoring rate. Although England put up 57 runs for the first wicket, thereafter wickets tumbled with none of the England batsmen able to build on the slow but steady start. The quicker bowlers Cathryn Fitzpatrick and Therese McGregor did most of the damage, while Karen Rolton's 2 for 6 runs underlines once again her all-round brilliance. For England Sarah Collyer (29) and Kathryn Leng (26) were the top scores.
