The England bowlers excelled themselves on day 2 of the first Ashes Test match, reducing Australia to its lowest score in many a year. (It made just 38 against England in Melbourne in 1957-8 so this is not a record contrary to some reports in the media). Lucy Pearson found form with 4 for 31 and Laura Newton with 3 for 10 as Australia slumped to 78 all out, leaving England with a respectable first innings lead. However, the brittle England batting showed itself once again and England failed to rub home its advantage and put itself in a convincing position. While a lead of 143 with 2 wickets remaining may look comforting in the context of the scores so far, the question remains whether the England bowlers can produce another miracle and take 10 wickets for less than this figure. Belinda Clark, Karen Rolton and their teammates will be smarting after this humiliation and determined to show who's the better side at the end of the day, and while England may enjoy some satisfaction from a remarkable day's performance, the batsman have again left the bowlers with everything to do. If England do not believe anything is possible after this performance then it's hard to know what can convince it! With 2 days left to play it seems, unless the weather interferes, a result one way or the other is a certainty. Courtesy: Don Miles (www.webbsoc.demon.co.uk)
