Mighty Aussies overcome Kenyan challenge with ease
Durban: Ageing left-arm spinner Asif Karim claimed three wickets for one run to give Australia a scare before the reigning champion scored a five-wicket win over Kenya in the World Cup on Saturday. The 39-year-old lit up the inconsequential Super Sixes match under the Kingsmead lights as Australia, chasing a modest 175, slipped from a comfortable 98 for 1 to 117 for five.Karim, whose figures at one stage read an incredible 8-6-2-3, dismissed Australian captain Ricky Ponting for 18 and then removed Darren Lehmann and Brad Hogg in one over.Karim's deadly spell must have left the Australians wondering what awaits them when they face Sri Lanka's star spinner Muthiah Muralitharan on the slow St George's Park wicket.Karim came out of retirement to play in the World Cup having quit after the last tournament in 1999."It was a wonderful day. There was turn in the wicket for me and by the grace of God I did well," Karim said."I have 20 years of experience in the tank. I retired after the 1999 World Cup but the board asked me to come and play again and it was my duty to serve my country.Karim was declared the man-of-the-match for his figures of 8.2-6-7-3.
