Injured Martyn faces final' heartache
Johannesburg: Australia's middle-order batsman Damien Martyn remains doubtful for Sunday's World Cup final despite making steady progress from a broken finger."The swelling's gone and it is getting better and better, but I will make myself available for the final only if I am 100 per cent fit," Martyn told reporters at the Wanderers on Thursday. The 31-year-old suffered the injury in his right index finger while fielding against Kenya last Saturday and missed the semi-final against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. "I have never broken my finger, but have told captain Ricky Ponting I will not jeopardise the final by playing with an injury," he said."I am lucky I am still in the side and don't have to watch the final on television like Jason Gillespie and Shane Warne."Spinner Warne missed the entire World Cup after a failed drugs test and fast bowler Gillespie returned home midway with a heel injury.Australian physiotherapist Errol Alcott said Martyn was responding to treatment to end the swelling. "We have put ice on it to get the swelling off and he has responded well," Alcott said."The World Cup comes once in four years, but it is important for him to be fully fit."
