Guwahati: Reliance Mobile has decided to shut down its STD and ISD facilities in Guwahati from Saturday evening much to the chagrin of the media and organisers of the One-day match between Australia and New Zealand on Sunday. Sources of the only mobile phone service provider in the state said on Saturday that the shutdown was for 24 hours to upgrade its services. To queries why the upgradation exercise was undertaken now when the cellular services would be the most essential on the day of the match, the sources said the decision was taken by Reliance head office.

Relaince's local office here also expressed its "helplessness" in informing its head office to postpone its upgradation activities in view of the match and the urgency for its services on Sunday. The spectators would not be allowed to take any kind of sharp weapons and only plastic containers for food and water would be allowed. The mediamen had also been barred from taking their mobile telephones to the stadium, as all facilities for transmitting news would be provided from the stadium complex.
