Wednesday, December 31 2003 19:08 Hrs (IST)
Playing in extremely cold conditions, the Karnataka girls did well to restrict J& K to a modest 93 all out in 38.4 overs. Off-spinner Shilpa Batra bowled an excellent spell of 8 overs conceded just 9 runs and picked up three important wickets. She was ably supported by Sunitha Vasudevan and Sahana Hiremath who picket up two wickets each. For J&K, Ankita top scored with 22 and Sajeela made 17 and they together put on 42 runs for the 8th wicket.
Jammu and Kashmir girls, who are being coached by the former Ranji player Shambhunath Sharma gave Karnataka the scare by removing both openers Shilpa and Sindhu before they had reached double figures. Medium pacer Ravinder bowled superbly to get rid of the openers. But skipper Deepika Babu played sensibly to stem the rot. Debutant Sharmila offered admirable support.
Once Sharmila was out leg before to Surabhi, Sahana walked in and wasted no time getting Karnataka close to victory. With just one run to get, Karnataka lost three wickets that of Deepika, Priyanka and Sahana to create some ripples. With Surabhi bowling a wide, Karnataka registered a victory and now meet West Bengal in the semi-finals to be played on the New Years day.
