Karnataka thrash Bengal to reach finals

Hazaribagh:For the second year in succession, Karnataka entered the finals of the Junior Nationals Championship being played at Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, beating a fancied West Bengal by a comfortable margin of 101 runs.

The stars of the semi-finals were skipper Deepika who scored a 81 ball 92 not out inclusive of 10 fours and a six, opener Sindhu Ashok who scored 72 with 9 fours and a six and off spinner Sunitha Vasudevan who bowled 8 overs and picked up 4 for 14.

Put into bat, Karnataka lost the first wicket at 14, that of Shilpa Batra who was caught smartly at point. Sharmila and Sunitha did not last very long but partnered Sindhu to take Karnataka to 47. In walked Deepika and the Karnataka innings flourished. Sindhu and Deepika put on 102 runs for the fourth wicket before Sindhu was stumped. Sahana and Deepika added a further 58 runs without being separated. Karnataka reached 207 for four in the allotted 40 overs.

When West Bengal batted, left arm medium pacer Pooja Shah gave a good start clean bowling star batswoman Arpita with her first ball. From there on Karnataka bowlers kept up constant pressure with off-spinner Sunitha doing the bulk of the damage. West Bengal were shot out for a paltry 107

Brief scores: Karnataka 208 for 4 in 40 overs (Sindhu 72, Deepika Babu 92 not out, Sahana Hiremath 25 not out, Payal Beb 2 for 34) beat West Bengal 107 all out in 36.3 overs (Payal 26, Shashwati 20, Sunitha Vasudevan 4 for 14, Sahana 2 for 15, Pooja Shah 2 for 24, Shilpa 2 for 23) by 101 runs.
