Friday, January 2 2004 20:54 Hrs (IST)
Karnataka medium pacer Aathmaja Samson caused early damage to the Andhra innings picking up three wickets, all caught behind by Sindhu before Diana David joined Savitha Nirala at 23 for three. Diana was dropped by Sindhu before she had opened her account and duo steadied the Andhra innings taking them to 70 when off-spinner Shilpa Batra clean bowled Diana for 23 that had four boundaries.
That was the last success the Karnataka eves tasted as Nirala tore into the attack in the company of Shravanthi. The pair posted 147 runs without being separated. Savitha Nirala scored 128 not out with 16 fours off 116 balls. She was lucky to be reprieved on 44 when Sindhu missed a simple stumping and was later dropped by Sahana at short mid-wicket and by Sharmila at square-leg. Her partner Shravanthi also enjoyed a life when on two she was dropped by Priyanka in the slips. The bowler to suffer on all three occasions was off- spinner Shilpa Batra.
Chasing 218 for a victory, Karnataka were off to a bad start with medium pacer Soujanya having Sindhu caught in the gully off the seventh ball of the innings and clean bowling Sharmila with the very next ball. Sunitha Vasudevan and Shilpa Batra put on 41 runs for the third wicket when Shilpa was caught brilliantly on the square-leg fence off a Soujanya bouncer.
In walked Deepika Babu and together with Sunitha started taking the attack to the Andhra camp. With 66 required from 10 overs and five wickets in hand, Deepika lost partners regularly to some good bowling by leg-spinner Nirala and off-spinner Diana David before she herself was caught and bowled by Diana. Karnataka were all out 22 runs short of target with nine balls to spare.
In the play off for the third place, West Bengal defeated Maharashtra at the Indira Gandhi School Complex ground.
Deepika Babu was awarded the Best Batswoman while Nirala was declared the Player of the Tournament.
Brief Scores: Andhra Pradesh 217 for 4 in 45 overs (Savitha Nirala 128 not out, Diana David 23, Shravanthi 27 no, Aathmaja Samson 3 for 52) beat Karnataka 195 all out in 43.3 overs (Shilpa Batra 24,Sunitha Vasudevan 35,Deepika Babu 80, Soujanya 3 for 42, Savitha Nirala 3 for 29 and Diana David 3 for 25) by 22 runs.
