|Kumble not to join Middlesex this summer|
Thursday, January 22 2004 18:23 Hrs (IST)
Vinny Codrington, chief executive of the Middlesex County Cricket Club, said the international commitments of the Indian ace spinner would prevent him from playing for the club.
"Kumble was very keen to come to Middlesex but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) believe that their commitments in the summerwould prevent him from playing for the club," Codrignton said.
"We had sorted things out with Anil before Christmas but did not announce his signing because we were awaiting clearance from the BCCI, so it was disappointing that it became public knowledge before any permission was given," he said.
"It is doubly disappointing because Anil would have been a major contributor to the squad, but we perfectly understand the BCCI's and Anil's decision."
Kumble is currently doing duty for the country in Australia where the team is playing a tri-series following four Test matches. After the completion of the Australian tour on February 10, the Indian team is scheduled to tour Pakistan in early March.
Middlesex will also be deprived of the services of its other overseas player -- seam bowler Ashley Noffke.
Noffke has said his long-standing back injury would prevent him from taking a full part in the season and he would wish to rest during the summer.
