Tuesday, January 27 2004 17:41 Hrs (IST)
East Zone, who scored a record 324 for four in stipulated 50-overs on winning the toss, bundled out Central Zone for 182 in 39.4 overs.
Chasing a difficult target of 325 for a win, Central got of to a disastrous start losing four quick wickets for 88 runs in 15 overs.
Test-discard J P Yadav, who came in following the dismissal of Abbas Ali (1), resisted the East attack to notch up 50 off 65 balls with the help of four hits to the fence.
Yadav played a cautious knock even when Central's wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals at the other end and brought in valuable 41-runs for the fourth wicket with Devender Bundela (29-6x4), who joined Yadav at the fall of Central skipper Gagan Khoda (20).
Bundela's swashbuckling 24-ball knock fetched him 29 runs including six fours before medium pacer Laxmi Ratan Shukla had him bowled. Yadav, who again paired up for 33 run partnership with Alind Naidu (13) for the fifth wicket, followed Bundela soon when spinner S Lahiri had him caught off R Satish.
Seamer S Sanyal and spinner Lahiri maintained superb line and length wrecking up Central's top order. Both of them shared three wickets each.
