Dhaka:Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has inaugurated a new stadium ahead of the upcoming Under-19 World Cup to be hosted by this cricket-crazy country.

The 18,000-seat stadium in Northwestern Bogra district, named the Shaheed Chandu Stadium, was also expected to boost Bangladesh's chances of hosting other major tournaments.

"We have slowly built infrastructure for cricket and this stadium is yet another addition to that process," State Minister for Sports Fazlur Rahman said.

He told the private NTV television network in Bogra: "The infrastructure gives us the courage and hope to host international meets, including the cricket World Cup one day."

The Under-19 World Cup begins in Bangladesh on February 15.
