'BCCI should make the final decision on Pak tour'
Thursday, February 12 2004 20:03 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi:Amid reports of security concerns for Indian cricketers on their upcoming tour to Pakistan, the External Affairs Ministry (MEA) on Thursday said it was for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to decide on it.

"Decisions on specific events are for each sporting association or Board to take," MEA spokesman Navtej Sarna told reporters.

He was asked about reports that the Union Home Ministry (MHA) has voiced its concerns over the safety and security of the players when they undertake the tour and whether the Indo-Pak series was on or off.

"I cannot speak on behalf of the MHA," he said. "As far as we are concerned the position is that on October 22 last year as part of our step-by-step process for normalisation of diplomatic and other links with Pakistan, Government had announced the resumption of sporting links. And within the framework of this policy, Government allows such contacts," he said.

To another question, he said the three-member team of the BCCI which has gone to Pakistan to make security assessments "is still there".

Pak tour likely to be held in May
