'Home Ministry never asked BCCI to defer tour'
Saturday, February 14 2004 16:10 Hrs (IST)

Jalandhar:The Home Ministry never recommended to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to postpone the Indo-Pak series and it has no such authority, Minister of State for Home I D Swami said in Jalandhar on Saturday.

"The Home Ministry had never recommended to the BCCI to postpone the proposed series due to the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. It had no authority to recommend postponement of the series as the decision is to be taken by the External Affairs Minister with the consultation of the BCCI," Swami told reporters.

Swami said the Government always wanted resumption of cricket ties between the two countries. Hailing the decision of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for giving the green signal to the tour, Swami said the security of the players would be given top priority and appropriate steps would be taken to ensure this.
