'Players are very happy to go to Pakistan'
Sunday, February 15 2004 14:41 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad:With Indian cricket team to finally embark on Pakistan tour, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani on Sunday said the players were "very happy" and are keen to prove their prowess there.

"I met the team members in Lucknow on Saturday and they were very happy that they have got a chance to tour Pakistan and prove their prowess," Advani said after laying foundation stones for gymnasiums to be built from his MP grant in minority community-dominated Dariapur-Kazipur assembly constituency.

Advani was referring to the wedding of younger son of Sahara Group chairman Subrata Roy, Seemanto Roy, held in Lucknow yesterday.

Much to the delight of a small crowd, Advani also made a special mention of Ahmedabad lad Parthiv Patel, whom he met at the wedding and remarked: "Yeh to hamara hai...Hamare Kshetra ka hai" (He is ours...and belongs to our region).

"People were seeing how young he was," Advani said about the baby-faced cricketer and added that Patel had achieved a lot in his tender age.

However, Advani lamented that India still lags behind other countries in all other sports except cricket.

"We have not made great strides in sports as much as the country with a population of 100 crore should have done... Though in cricket we have," the Deputy Prime Minister said.
