'Pak tour would pave way for better ties'
Sunday, February 15 2004 13:39 Hrs (IST)

Hyderabad:Describing the ensuing Indo-Pak cricket series as a part of peace process, initiated by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said such moves would reflect the changing face of South Asia.

"Now cricket is for peace and the Pakistan tour would pave way for better Indo-Pak relations," Naidu said saying things have changed for better in the region.

From discord to concord, tension to peace and isolation to co-operation, things are moving with the initiation of Prime Minister and the Indo-Pak cricket series would certainly help consolidate ties between the two nations, he said.

When pointed out that the Home ministry had given a report expressing apprehensions over the security cover to players, Naidu said, "it was their assessment of the situation and the decision was finally taken by Vajpayee after reviewing it from all angles. He gave the nod for the cricket series".

Dismissing the sudden volte-face on the cricket tour, he said, "it was all the creation of media. The Home ministry has done its duty by assessing the situation prevailing in Pakistan and prepared a statement on that basis".

Prime Minister after taking stock of the situation from various standpoints had taken the decision that the cricket series is on, Naidu asserted.
