'Indian team could play in English County'
Monday, February 23 2004 17:42 Hrs (IST)

Gurgaon:After the England 'A' team's participation in the Duleep Trophy, a team from India could play in County cricket in the European country in near future, national selection committee chairman Syed Kirmani said on Monday.

"Initiatives are being taken to send a team from India - it could be India 'A', Under-19 or any other team - to play in the English County. The idea was mooted after England 'A' came to play in the Duleep Trophy," Kirmani said.

England 'A', who are engaged in a battle against Central Zone in a Duleep Trophy match in Gurgaon, were the first overseas team to play in any domestic competition of India. Kirmani said he was in favour of pitting several other foreign teams in the Duleep Trophy in future.

On India's upcoming tour of Pakistan, the former wicketkeeper said the historic visit, first in 15 years, would be "helpful in developing better relations between the two neighbours."Kirmani was in Gurgaon alongwith fellow selectors Pranob Roy, Sanjay Jagdale and Kiran More to watch the players perform in Duleep Trophy matches ahead of the selection of the Indian team for the Pakistan series on March 3.

The team would be selected at Kolkata before the start of the tour on March 10. India will play three Tests and five One-day Internationals during the 40-day tour.
