Durban:South African captain Graeme Smith, recently operated upon for a chronic stomach problem at a hospital in Cape Town, would be able to resume training only by next month ahead of their Sri Lanka tour, United Cricket Board of South africa (UCBSA) said on Friday.

UCBSA spokesperson Gerald De Kock said in a statement that Smith was recuperating at home after the surgical procedure to reconstruct his stomach valve, which was not fully developed.

The chronic condition, while not debilitating in any way, had been causing the captain severe discomfort for a number of years, he said.

De Cock said Smith would be able to resume training in mid-june, before leading South Africa on a five-week tour of Sri Lanka in July.

South Africa are slated to visit India in November.
