Mumbai :The Cooch Behar Trophy Under-19 cricket tournament would now be played on a two-tier format, similar to the Ranji Trophy, from the forthcoming season.

The tournament would have 15 teams playing in the upper division and the remaining 12 in the lower division.

"The technical committee of the BCCI, headed by Sunil Gavaskar, had suggested this to the Board and it was accepted at the last AGM," Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) joint secretary Ratnakar Shetty said on Thursday.

"Two teams will gain promotions to the top tier and the bottom two teams from the top tier would be demoted to the lower tier as in Ranji Trophy," he added.

Till last season the Cooch Behar tournament was played on a zonal league basis initially after which two teams from each zone used to qualify for the inter-zonal knock-out rounds.
