Sydney:Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh will re-ignite the Sydney Olympic cauldron as the torch relay for the Athens Olympics winds through Australia at the start of a 78-day journey back to Greece.

Olympic 400 meters champion Cathy Freeman, who sparked the cauldron to mark the opening of the Sydney 2000 Olympics, will be the first to carry the torch when the Australian leg of the relay starts at the Sydney Opera House on Friday.

Waugh, who retired earlier this year as the most successful Test captain of all time, will re-ignite the Stadium Australia cauldron later on Friday.

"Steve obviously was honoured to be selected to run with the torch in the Sydney Olympic 2000 torch relay and he's equally honoured now to have the opportunity to revisit that experience," said his manager Robert Joske.

"To be selected to light the cauldron is just another wonderful opportunity for him that comes along with obviously being Australian of the Year."
