"It is a part-time assignment. Since I was free I requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to release me for a while so that I could take up the job with the Oman Cricket Association. It's a month-long assignment", the former dashing batsman said in Mumbai on Tuesday.
"The Oman team is in Mumbai playing a series of three One-day matches with the Cricket Club of India to prepare for the 15-nation ACC tournament. We won the first match on Sunday," Patil said.
The Oman team, which comprises four natives and expatriates from Pakistan and India, have been placed in Group C with Hong Kong, Bahrain and Afghanistan.
BCCI joint secretary Prof Ratnakar Shetty said Patil had written to BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya and obtained his green signal before taking up the assignment.
