"Ganguly has agreed to the proposal of becoming our brand ambassador," said G.D. Gautam, principal secretary of the IT industry in the Marxist-ruled eastern state.
"He was very much impressed with our recent achievements. We are planning to involve him in some key promotional events," he said on Friday.
"We believe that his dynamic outlook and robust image as a successful captain of the national cricket team will help West Bengal's IT industry surge ahead," he added.
Ganguly confirmed he had agreed to the proposal from the West Bengal Government.
"Yes, you can say I am the brand ambassador of West Bengal's IT industry. I would be happy if I could help the industry."
Ganguly is India's most successful Test skipper with 15 wins. He also has a fine captaincy record in One-dayers, leading India to the final of last year's World Cup in South Africa.
