"I am still looking for a middle order slot," Sehwag said in Bangalore on the sidelines of the ongoing fitness camp for Asia Cup probables when asked about his comment before the beginning of the last season that he preferred to bat in the middle order.
Nevertheless, he is enjoying playing as an opener but pointed out that he is (basically) a middle order batsman. "If I get a chance, I will play in the middle order," the dashing batsman said.
Sehwag said he has not expressed this keenness to Ganguly and the team management because his present opening combination is going on well. "So I don't want to disturb our combination. That's why I am not telling anybody."
On batting position in One-dayers, he said: "That's captain's choice. I am fine with opening. I am happy. I just want to play One-dayers whichever the position."
Sehwag said in his opinion, India needs a defensive player to partner him in Test matches. "India needs one defensive opener whose technique is correct...who can easily play 15-20 overs."
He said with a stroke player like him opening the innings, no body is sure whether he will last for 20 overs or one over or 100 overs because he plays his (natural) game.
Asked who he thought is an ideal defensive opening player to partner him, Sehwag said: "My combination is very good with Sanjay Bangar and Aakash Chopra because both are defensive players and they will play 15-20 overs easily and I will go for my shots."
On the prospect of opening Test innings with Yuvraj, he said he hasn't opened with Yuvraj so far but added that they get along well and envisioned that their combination would be good as well.
"Let's see what will happen in future. Who opens (along with him)...before the series, there may be changes... plans may change... anything can happen. But it will be good (opening with Yuvraj, if he is chosen to open)."
Sehwag noted that he and Yuvraj had played together in Under-19 team and also in 19 One-day Internationals.
On batting position in One-dayers, he said: "That's captain's choice. I am fine with opening. I am happy. I just want to play One-dayers whichever the position".
Sehwag said he is also concentrating on his bowling so that whenever the captain wants to chip in he would be available.
Asked if marriage has made any difference to his batting, Sehwag said he is enjoying both his batting as well as personal life.
And is his wife giving any tips to him on cricket matters? "She is interested only in my batting," the newly married man quipped.
