Colombo:The world's top Test wicket-taker Muttiah Muralitharan has agreed to help the United Nations in its fight against hunger by promoting awareness programmes, the UN said in a statement.

The United Nations World Food Program said it will present "cricket legend Muttiah Muralitharan in his new role fighting hunger" in Colombo next week.

Sri Lankan off-spinner Muralitharan last month overtook former West Indies bowler Courtney Walsh to become the leading Test wicket taker with 527 dismissals.

"Murali brings his record-breaking reputation to WFP's campaign to end hunger and poverty," the statement said.

He will join the "Walk the World" fund-raising event in Colombo on June 20.
