''A couple of Indian captains, just preceding Ganguly, had also tried hard. But somehow, the team did not click. Bringing togetherness and making the team click are the aims of every captain. And Ganguly succeeded on both counts,'' Dutt said at a function in Kolkata where Ganguly was felicitated.
''The way he has built up the image of the team and made it stronger, only few captains have been able to do in the past. He has given India a better position in the world map of cricket,'' Dutt said, as Ganguly seemed visibly embarrassed.
Dutt, who was on his first visit to the state after assuming charge as the sports minister, said Ganguly had reached his present enviable position through hard work and dedication, and hoped that he would continue to make the nation proud in future.
''He is still a young man. And he has a long innings to play,'' the actor-turned-minister said at the function organised by the private television company Tetris World Com to celebrate the second anniversary of its popular Bengali sports programme Dus Miniter Khel telecast on a local channel.
Comparing the cricketer to a versatile actor, Dutt said, ''Such actors can play any role. Similarly, Ganguly is equally adept in all departments of the game - batting, bowling and fielding.''
In his speech, Ganguly said the sports fraternity had high hopes on Dutt, who was a 'performer in his days'.
''He will understand the mindset of people who perform on the field and the amount of pressure they have to handle,'' he added.
''We look up to you to bring about improvement in sports all over India,'' he said.
A video compact disc 'Amader Sourav' was released on the occasion.
