Islamabad:Former Pakistan captain and selector Aamir Sohail has lambasted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for its lack of tact in handling the temperamental Shoaib Akhtar and said the "mental torture" by way of various allegations being inflicted on him could cut short his career.

"Akhtar was mentally tortured by PCB through series of inquiries on non-issues which could hurt his career badly," Sohail was quoted as saying by the local daily The Nation.

"Blaming a player for his loyalty with team and nation, pushing him to inquiries and investigation commissions, demoralising and torturing him mentally is a worse example of teasing a player, and then calling him to the camp of the team after this exercise has no meaning," Sohail said while referring to recent efforts by the PCB to investigate Akhtar's injuries in the series against India.

After ruling him out of next month's Asia Cup, citing injury reasons, the PCB made a 'U-turn' and included Akhtar among the 26 probables.

Sohail also said the PCB has mishandled coach Javed Miandad by sacking him and reserved his comments on how the new foreign coach Bob Woolmer would perform.
