Chandigarh:Former left-arm spinner Maninder Singh joined the debate on India's opening combination saying the second opener's slot should be occupied by a specialist.

"If Ganguly prefers Yuvraj Singh as second opener, then he must have a lot of confidence in Yuvraj. However, the opener's job is specialised and must go to a specialist," Maninder, who played 35 Tests and claimed 88 wickets at an average of 37.36, said.

He, however, appreciated Aakash Chopra's performance in the recent past."Aakash Chopra is doing well in the Tests," he said.

Among the spinners, he said, Murali Kartik and Ramesh Powar were good but they would perform better with experience just like Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble.

"As far as performance of spinners is concerned, we must keep patience. With experience spinners perform well," he added.

Maninder also said, "if Sourav remains captain of the team, he will give good spinners to the country," he said.
