Wellington :New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said on Friday that it was revamping its international season at home and would scrap the Wellington Boxing Day Test that was started in 1998.

NZC chief executive Martin Snedden said the new schedule was designed to improve the quality of Test match conditions while bringing the excitement of One-day cricket to a greater number of New Zealanders during the holiday period.

A Sri Lanka series of five One-day Internationals (ODI) will begin on Boxing Day with a One-day match at Auckland.

"Under the previous format, the only cricket played during the holiday period was the Boxing Day Test in Wellington."

Snedden said the new format would allow Test cricket to be played at a time when weather was likely to be more settled.

Australia's tour will begin with the first 20-over match between two International Cricket Council full member nations under lights at Auckland's Eden Park on February 17, followed by a five-match ODI series and a three match Test series.
