Karthik, who is the fifth player to don the gloves from the state, said he would like to play to his potential and retain his place permanently in the team.
"I am not worried whether I will get to keep wickets. I am eager to play to my potential right from the first opportunity that I get and the rest will not bother me," he said.
Asked to say whether he is disheartened on captain Sourav Ganguly's remarks that Rahul Dravid would continue to keep wickets, Karthik, who has progressed during the last couple of seasons with two hundreds in the Ranji Trophy semifinal and final when Tamil Nadu was in dire straits, said, "I am not bothered about such things. I will continue to obey my captain and respect the decisions of the team management".
SVT Chari, MO Srinivasan, TV Parthasarathy and Bharat Reddy were the former Tamil Nadu wicketkeepers to have done duty for India in the past.
