London:Warwickshire batsman Ian Bell and Nottinghamshire's South African-born batsman Kevin Pietersen head a squad of 12 players selected to attend England's National Academy this winter.

Bell, 22, missed out on a place in the senior squad for the trip to South Africa despite scoring 70 on his Test debut against the West Indies at the Oval last week.

The 24-year-old Pietersen was born in Pietermaritzburg but qualifies for England next month and has already stated his ambition to play Test cricket for his adopted country.

The Academy will run from October 10 to December 16 and most of the players can expect to go to the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka with an England 'A' squad in late February.

In the UAE they will play a number of One-day matches before travelling to Sri Lanka for a One-day tournament against Sri Lanka 'A' and Pakistan 'A' and two-four day games against Sri Lanka 'A'.
