Kolkata:Expressing his happiness over being elected the new BCCI president, Ranbir Singh Mahendra today said the elections were conducted in a free and fair manner.

"I'm happy to be elected. Of course, it was keenly fought and went right down to the wire, I don't think my election was unfair," he said.

The hitherto Haryana Cricket Association (HCA) secretary and son of former Chief Minister Bansi Lal reckoned the disqualification of the Maharastra representatives was correct.

"I see nothing wrong with that. The decision to disqualify them (the Maharastra representatives ) was correct. Nothing much should be read into that," Mahendra asserted.

Meanwhile, a defeated Sharad Pawar took his loss sportingly. " I accept the verdict. I would extend all my cooperation to the new president," Pawar said.
