New Delhi:Former Test cricketer Javagal Srinath on Sunday preferred Yuvraj Singh to open the innings with Virender Sehwag in the Test series against Australia saying that it would be a good combination as Test cricket had changed a lot.
"I would want Yuvraj to open the innings. I know it would be hard on (Akash) Chopra, but Test cricket has changed. Now a days the run rate is around four per over and I think Yuvraj opening the innings will be a good thing," Srinath said in an interview to a TV channel.
The Indians have been trying to sort out the opening combination although Cricket Board secretray S K Nair had made it clear that Chopra and Sehwag would open the innings in the Test series while announcing the team for first two Tests.
The former pacer did not agree that a series of poor scores by Sehwag in the recent One-Day International series was a matter of concern.
"India has a fantastic record in international cricket. His style of batting suits Test match cricket. He can destroy the opposition attack because lot of fielders are inside the ring," he said.
When asked why would he not favour Chopra, who complimented well with Sehwag in Australia and Pakistan, he said, "New ball is very easy to handle in the Indian conditions it is the reverse swing which is the problem and it is spin which is going to matter on Indian wickets."
