Wellington:New Zealand left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori could lead the New Zealand side in the forthcoming One-day series against Bangladesh in their own backyard next month as regular skipper Stephen Fleming was expected to return home after the two Test matches in order to rest a long-term abdominal injury.

The likes of all-rounders Jacob Oram, Chris Cairns and Craig McMillan are the other contenders for the post of skipper.

"If Stephen is unable to play in the One-dayers in Bangladesh, as has been sounded out at this point of time, Daniel is of course the obvious choice to replace him," former coach David Trist said here.

Trist had little doubt that the young tweaker would do a good job at the helm.

"He is tactically very sound. The fact that he is an all-rounder would also bring other aspects to the job," Trist added.
