Mumbai:Kiwi vice-Captain Chris Cairns today said the Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar is a better batsman than ex-Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar as the former could score at a faster rate and possessed an array of strokes.

"Though it is a debatable question, I personally think that Sachin (Tendulkar), who has more runs than Sunny (Gavaskar) in both forms of cricket (one-dayers and Test), hasthe edge as he has scored his runs at a faster clip consistently," Cairns told reporters after conducting the ICICI Prudential's cricket clinic for children at Hindu Gymkhana here.

When pointed out that Gavaskar got his runs against some of the fearsome fast bowlers including Malcolm Marshall and Michael Holding (both from West Indies), Dennis Lillee andJeff Thomson (both Australia) that too without a helmet,Cairns said "Gavaskar was very gutsy and technically correct but Tendulkar has all the strokes in the book."

"Though I have not played against Sunny, I have seen him play against Hadlee and others while I have seen Tendulkar perform from close range and according to me he (Tendulkar) is the best batsman in the world," he added.

Speaking about his own childhood, Cairns, said "there was hardly any sponsored clinics when I started off as a kid but now more and more sponsors are helping the kids with this kind of clinics and I should say it not only helps the kids but also a player like me as it would not have been possible for me to meet these talented kids, who have an immense knowledge of the game, without the sponsor's help."
