New Delhi:Virender Sehwag was today named captain while Ajay Jadeja was appointed as his deputy in the Delhi team for the forthcoming Ranji Trophy cricket championship.

With Sehwag most likely to be away on India duty, the decision paves the way for Jadeja to captain a state team after his return from the match-fixing ban.

The duo were among 27 probables named after a heated selection committee meeting that lasted for more than two hours at the DDCA headquarters at the Feroze Shah Kotla here.

Co-chairman of the selection committee Chetan Chauhan staged a walk out midway through the discussion when certain players he had suggested were ignored.

As it were, eight more players were "invited (to the camp) so that the selectors could have another look".

It was also probably the first instance when a Government nominee was involved in the selection of a state cricket team.

Vishakar Shastri, however, kept himself out of the actual selection and acted more as an observer.

It marked the high point of the pre-season drama that saw three persons being named as in charge of the team.

Madan Lal will be the coach but Tarik Sinha and selection committee chairman Yashpal Sharma will also have a say in running the team.

The 27-member list also included India opener Aakash Chopra and left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra.
