Melbourne:A bouncer charged over the death of former Australian Test cricketer David Hookes pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and assault as he was committed to stand trial next year.

Zdravko Micevic, 22, will be tried in the Victorian Supreme Court in March, magistrate Ian McGrane told the Melbourne Magistrates Court at the end of a week-long committal on Monday.

Hookes, 48, died in a Melbourne hospital on January 19, a day after his head was injured in an incident at the Beaconsfield Hotel in suburban St Kilda, where Micevic worked as a bouncer.

Micevic has claimed that Hookes threw the first punches in the incident that led to his death, the court heard.
