Maher century puts Queensland in strong position

Brisbane:Captain and opener Jimmy Maher scored a century to put Queensland in a strong position against Tasmania on the opening day of their Sheffield Shield cricket match at the Gabba here.

Maher, who fell 13 overs short of seeing the entire day's play out, was dismissed for 148 as Queensland marched to 310 for six after being sent in to bat on Monday.

Wicketkeeper Chris Hartley (3) and paceman Andy Bichel (23) were still at the crease heading into Tuesday's second day.

Adam Griffith was the best of Tasmania's bowlers with 3-84.

In Brisbane (day one): Queensland 310 for 6 (J. Maher 148, C. Philipson 40; A. Griffith 3-84) v Tasmania.
