Kevin Pietersen and Geraint Jones staged a fine fightback as they put on 120 runs in 85 balls after the visitors had slipped to 121-5 in the 35th over.
England started their innings on a disastrous note when they were reduced to 61 for three as young seamer Tinashe Panyangara proved effective for the hosts snaring Ian Bell and Michael Vaughan cheaply.
England experienced another slide in the middle overs but thanks to the superb rearguard action from Pietersen And Jones they were able to reach a total in excess of two fifty.
Pietersen cracked a fine unbeaten 77 not out off 76 balls while Jones blasted 66 off 46 balls.
