Gilchrist blasts 68; Vettori triggers Aussie slide

Melbourne:Adam Gilchrist gave the Aussie a blasting start scoring 68 off just 54 balls. But just when the Aussie seemed to run away with the match Chris Cirns struck to send back the dangerous Aussie vice-captain.

Following the departure of Gilcrist the Aussie looked vulnerable as they lost quick wickets of the Aussie captain Ricky Ponting for a quick 29, Damien Martyn for one and Andrew Symonds for duck. All the three falling victim to New Zealand vice-captain Daniel Vettori.

Earlier, Kiwi captain Stephen Fleming won the toss and put Australia into bat in the first Chappell-Hadlee Trophy one-day series cricket match at Docklands stadium on Sunday.

The stadium's roof was closed and the match will be played under lights.

Australia rested fast bowlers Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie, giving Brett Lee just his third match in over two months.

Batsman Simon Katich was named as 12th man.

New Zealand, hammered 2-0 in the recent two-Test series against Australia, made Chris Harris 12th man.

This is the first match in the three-match series, with further matches in Sydney on Wednesday and Brisbane on December 10.
