VVS Laxman cracked a brilliant 135 to put hosts on top after the team, put in to bat and losing three early wickets at 79.
Laxman, who put Assam bowlers to mat with his power packed wristy shots on either side of the wicket, scoring 135 which included 18 fours in a space of 186 balls during his 260 minute stay at the wicket.
Laxman found an enterprising partner in A T Rayudu and the duo recorded a 65 run partnership for the fourth wicket before Rayudu was out for a breezy 36 studded with six fours and one six.
Arjun Yadav joined skipper Laxman and scripted a solid innings by compiling 135 runs for the fifth wicket to put hosts on top.
Arjun scored a firm but cautious 54 with seven hits to the fence and one huge six before he was caught out. Laxman perished soon for 135 and the Assam bowlers had little to cheer as tailender Vishnuvardhan excelled by a late charge.
Vishnuvardhan scored 50 off just 28 balls with five fours and four sixes and recorded a 52 run partnership for the eighth wicket with keeper Ibrahim Khaleel who is at crease on 5 when stumps were drawn.
For Assam spinner Arien Konwar claimed three wickets for 42, including the prize wicket of Laxman, and Satish drew the first blood, dismissing opener Daniel Manohar and ended the day by sending the dangerous looking Vishnuvardhan back to pavilion at the end of the day.
