Hyderabad pound Assam; in semis

Hyderabad:Hosts Hyderabad defeated Assam by an innings and 56 runs and logged five points to top the Elite 'B' group with 17 points and ensure a berth in semi-finals of the Ranji trophy cricket match.

Put in to bat, hosts piled up 340 runs and bowled the visitors out for 158 in the first innings. Assam in course of follow-on, were all out for 126 after lunch today to givehosts a resounding win on the penultimate day.

Hosts also gathered an extra bonus point in this match for the overwhelming victory and now leads the Elite Group B table with 17 points besides qualifing for the semifinals.

Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Baroda and Tamil Nadu are the other contenders for the second place from the group.

Rejuvenated by the presence of skipper VVS Laxman, Hyderabad defeated Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Assam and lost to Tamil Nadu and Baroda in the league phase.

Resuming with an arrear of 176 runs, Assam batsmen had shown determination and grit in the morning session with R Satish scoring a resolute half century adding 77 runs for thethird wicket in the company of Zakiria Jaffri (25).

Satish was brillintly stumped by keeper Ibrahim Khaleel as Indrasekhar Reddy continued to spin his magic web for 56 in 63 balls inclusive of nine fours and one six.

Jaffri and Sarvanan(12) perished soon and the Assam tail tumbled under pressure with Koushik Reddy coming good with his spin in the second session. The last five wickets fell in a space of 22 balls and four batsmen returned to pavilion without scoring a run ashosts celebrated the new year with a massive victory and an entry into the knock out phase of the Ranji trophy.

Speedster Vishnuvardhan, spinner Indrasekhar Reddy and Koushik Reddy claimed three wickets each. New found Koushik returned with impressive figures of getting 3 wicekts for 22 runs in his 8 over spell of which four were maidens.
