Ackerman named Leicestershire captain

London:Former South Africa Test batsman Hylton Ackerman will take over as Leicestershire captain for the upcoming 2005 season.

The 31-year-old Ackerman, who signed a three-year contract last month, succeeds Australian Brad Hodge, who decided to leave the club at the end of last season and has joined Lancashire.

Ackerman, who has extensive captaincy experience in South African domestic cricket, made three appearances at international the level.

He hit a fine 52 in his first Test innings against Pakistan in 1998. He has also accumulated more than 7,000 first class runs at an average of 41, including 18 centuries.
