Ahmedabad:Mumbai outplayed Maharashtra by 51 runs in a Ranji trophy one-day match to earn the maximum five points here today.

Put into bat, Mumbai put up a challenging score of 248 for seven with some useful partnerships from their dependable top order. In reply, Maharashtra were all out for 197 with comeback man Abhijit Kale remaining unbeaten with the top score of 66.

Wasim Jaffer (52) and Amol Mazumdar (38) combined well to add 125 runs as Mumbai made a smooth progress. Middle order batsman Vinayak gave a late boost to the total smashing 42 runs in just 33 balls with three hits to the boundary.

For Maharashtra, seamer Ajit Patil emerged as the top wicket taker with figures of 3/57 from his 10-over spell.

Maharashtra tried to make a cautious start in their chase through openers Dhruv Mohan and Dhiraj Jadhav but Mohan was the first to go when the total was on 20.

Jadhav, however, was undeterred by his partners' fall and made a strokeful 51 with five hits to the fence.

Kale came up with a fighting half century with six hits to the boundary but in the end ran out of partners as Maharashtra folded up on 197.

Kale's partnership with Ranjit Khirid (27) was worth 57 runs and was the only hope for Maharashtra getting close to the target as Nilesh Kulkarni ran through the lower order and ended with a five wicket haul.

Brief Scores: Mumbai: 248/7 (Wasim jaffer 52, Vinayak Samant 42; Ajit Patil 3/57) beat Maharashtra: 197 all out (Abhijit Kale 66 not out, Dhiraj Jadhav 51; Nilesh Kulkarni 5/41).
