Kolkata:Legendary cricketer Steve Waugh on Friday said the Australians did not believe in intimidating opponents on the cricket field and the team's present success rested on its superior playing ability.

"The Aussies are the best side. They play like champions. They play to win," Waugh told newspersons on a visit to Eden Gardens where he watched a one-day match between the under-19 teams of India and England.

The former Australian skipper said that the frequent appeals made by the Australians showed their aggressive stand.

"They make more appeals because they create more chances, play more aggressively," he said.

Waugh also denied the umpiring in Australia was biased and heavily favoured the hosts.

Asked to name the best captain in the world, Waugh said,"I cannot comment on that. But I know for sure that Australia is the best team in the world now. And I feel proud to have led such a side."
