New Delhi:Former Indian captain and coach Kapil Dev said sportsmen might feel proud in displaying the tricolour but the law of the land must be obeyed in all matters.

"To me it is a patriotic thing. As a sportsman, wearing the national flag gives me great pride and happiness. But if the law of the land says it is not allowed, then we have to go by that," Kapil said while inaugurating the YMCA inter-state basketball tournament.

"If Sachin (Tendulkar) or (Virender) Sehwag or even the hockey players want to display the national flag in their dress, it is a good thing."But I don't know the technical side of it (of how to display the tricolour with respect)," he said.

The displaying of national flag has become an issue after the government wrote to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asking it to stop its players from wearing the same on their helmet as such an act was in violation of the law.
