Perth:Veteran Belinda Clark played as captain's knock of 87 to propel Australia eves to a 87 run victory over World champions New Zealand in the opening tie of the three-match Rose Bowl series at Lilac Hill.

Clarke was ably supported by Mel Jones as their association laid the platform for the hosts as they hit up 207-8 off their allotted 50 overs. Jones scored a fine 55.

Chasing 208 for victory, the Kiwis were never in the hunt as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were packed out for 120 off its 46 overs.

For Australia, Clea Smith and Karen Rolton picked up two wickets each as the Kangaroos kickstarted the series on a bright note. The second match will be played at the WACA in Perth on Saturday.

The series is serving as preparation for the World Cup, which begins on 22 March in South Africa.
