Sydney:Tasmanian batsman Michael Bevan has been named the 2005 Sheffield Shield player of the year after scoring a record 1,464 runs during the season.

The powerful left-hander and former Test player made an average 97.60 over nine matches to beat Matthew Elliott's previous record of 1,381 runs for Victoria in 2003-2004.

Bevan ended his season 312 runs ahead of New South Wales batsman Phil Jaques, who is unlikely to overtake his Tasmanian rival even though he has two more possible innings to play in this week's Sheffield Shield final against Queensland.
